Can you get a Job using Facebook Groups (Including a List of Groups to Join) Hands up if you just use your Facebook for stalking people! Facebook is one of the biggest social media platforms out there, with over a billion users it is easy to assume you have an account. Most of us use it religiously, checking it before we do anything else in the morning and having a quick nosy before we switch off at night. But what are we spending all our time doing on Facebook? When it comes to Facebook I think you can divide users in two categories. 1) The person who uploads a thousand photos a day of their food, their dog or just anything theyre doing (I dont need to know everything about you including your bowel moments #keepittoyourself) OR 2) the silent stalker who never uploads anything, they just scroll through others photos and get far too frustrated when someone doesnt reveal their whole life story because youre invested now, they need to let you know whats happening. Personally, I fall somewhere in between, rarely posting but being engrossed in those statuses that read lm over it with no further explanation. (Why did you post it if you dont want to talk about it!) But Im getting off subject, Facebook can have another more practical use. The way we apply for jobs has advanced and now social media is a normal part of the recruitment process. Employers are spending a lot to brand themselves online and make it easier for you to get updates on their latest career opportunities. But is there an easier way to search for jobs on Facebook? Somewhere where they are all in one convenient place? Well you need to start looking at Facebook groups as a great way to open up your job search. Im going to give you the dos and donts of how to find a job successfully using these groups. Get Involved Once you have joined any group the first thing you need to do is to introduce yourself. You need to clearly state what you are looking to get out of the group, it is all about building a network and making people aware you are looking for new opportunities. You cant just join and expect the jobs to come flooding in, like any part of your job search, you need to be active. Share the Knowledge Facebook groups are not only about finding yourself work but they are about support one another to get back into employment. A good Facebook group will feel like a community where you can share advice and help one another. So spread the love and if someone posts a message, then offer your insights. The more you are willing to help the more others will help you. Tag Others in More than just Memes Similar to above but in any group you are going to come across a lot of jobs that are just not right for you but that doesnt mean they wont be great for someone else. If you come across an advert that might work for a fellow group member or a friend, then tag them into the comments so they dont miss the opportunity. Dont Assume, Ask Questions One thing that can be frustrating about social media recruiting is its not always possible to post an entire job advert; so the recruiter may only have left a brief description in the group about the available job. But if it is not enough to help you decide whether you are right then ask questions, it is also a great way to connect with the recruiter in a more informal way before you even send-off that application. Be too Informal When it comes to applying for jobs through social media the lines between informal and the professional approach can become blurred. Remember to always put your best foot forward so even if it is just a comment do what youd do before submitting an application. Perform a quick spell check and make sure it sounds personable but always professional. (Remove the kisses and the thanks huns think would you say that on your CV) Bad Mouth other Employers We have all had a bad boss or worked for a company that wasnt that great but being too vocal about it in a public space (remember Facebook is public) just looks unprofessional. If you have nothing nice to say, say nothing at all; whilst I dont fully agree with that statement putting comments with swear words under adverts or call them out just makes you look bad. If you see a job go live that you believe to be a scam the best thing to do is to report it to an admin of that group, as they have the power to remove that person or job advert if needed. Provide your Personal Details Facebook job groups are supposed to be a way of reviewing opportunities and then if you like the sound of it, you should go down the route of a normal recruitment process. Although, the admins of these groups spend a lot of time deleting spam messages or those that look like scams, there is always potential for one to get through so protect yourself. You should never need to give your bank details to an employer over Facebook, so think before you send. Especially with the new data protection laws coming into places in May, you shouldnt even be providing your email in these types of group. Instead ask for their website or for their job application process so you can apply through a secure job application database or job board. I have recently joined a lot of Facebook groups to try and find out what makes a great group above the rest and trust me it took a lot of time and effort so I wanted to do some of the hard work for you. Keep Your Social Media Profiles Current at All Times If youâre active on social media in general, your various profiles are probably up-to-date on the regular. If theyâre not, and you update them out of the blue, it could raise suspicions, particularly on LinkedIn and if youâre connected to coworkers â" which you probably are. Ian Cluroe, director of global brand and marketing for Alexander Mann Solutions, warns against this sudden attention to your social media profiles. âKeeping your social profiles up-to-date ensures that you donât raise flags when youâre the one actively searching, and enables you to be found by sources who may have an opportunity that youâre the perfect person for but you would have otherwise known nothing about because your outdated profile made you impossible to find,â he says. 2. Donât Send Resumes to Blind Ads Online If you donât know who the recipient of your resume is, do not send it. I repeat, DO NOT SEND IT. You donât know who is on the other end, and serendipity has a way of biting you in the butt for not being careful. âA woman once told me that her coworker responded to a blind ad and then was confronted a short while later by someone in the company from Human Resources,â reveals certified career coach Cheryl E. Palmer. âThe HR professional asked her if she was looking for another job. The woman lied and said no. The HR professional responded, âI got your resume.â It turned out that the job that this woman had unwittingly applied for was at her own company.â 3. Be Cautious When Youâre Networking Of course you have to network when youâre searching for a new position â" just be smart about it. Be very careful to whom youâre telling your plans to switch jobs, because you never know who youâre talking to. As a rule, donât go to networking events at a bar where youâre going to have a couple drinks and become less inhibited. Thatâs a recipe for certain disaster. 4. Donât Let Your Attire Give It Away Hereâs a prime example of amateur tactics that absolutely raise red flags: When your everyday work attire is chinos and a button-down and you all of a sudden show up to work in a suit and tie. Donât Tell Your Coworkers That Youâre Looking Iâm sure there are coworkers you trust to keep the secret that youâre looking for a new job, but my life motto has fared me well so far â" trust no one, and fear everyone. Besides, you donât know what plans they have in mind for their own career advancement. They may view your undercover search as an opportunity to swoop in and take your job right out from under you. And if that happens, youâll kick yourself for being so loose-lipped. Ruthless comes in all shapes, sizes, and smiles. 6. Consider Having an Executive Recruiter on Your Side If youâre afraid of getting caught searching for a job (and you should be), there are ways to ease your anxiety. Hiring an executive recruiter is one such solution, but itâll cost you. Depending on the type of job youâre seeking, however â" like CEO or VP of Somethingorother â" the potential salary may be worth the expense. Zach Brown, a senior sourcing recruiter for David Brown International, details a few of the benefits of using a recruiter. âA skilled recruiter can leverage their network and industry connections to get your resume and portfolio in front of employers in your field that are looking for top talent,â he explains. âGoing this route will get you exposure with the right companies without having to post your resume everywhere for all to see. Look for an established recruiter that specializes in your career field and has worked with the types of organizations that you are interested in working for.â 7. Keep Your Search Quiet, Especially on Social Media As a professional, you should be mindful of what youâre posting to social media, in general â" no more drama! â" but you should particularly be conscious to keep your job search updates off Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and other sites. Even if youâre not connected to your boss or coworkers online, what you post has a mysterious way of popping up in places you donât want it to be seen â" security settings, be damned. 8. Donât Use Anyone at Your Current Job as a Reference If you donât want to raise a red flag that youâre looking for a new job, WHY would you use one of your coworkers as a reference? Surely you have three other people with whom youâre not currently working who can vouch for you, no? 9. Search for Your New Job on Your Own Time and Equipment And, finally, donât be sketchy and use company time to search for a position with another company. Thatâs not only dumb, but also disloyal and rude. Use your own computer and other resources on your own time. Get caught and youâre likely to get fired on the spot. The only silver lining is that it will seriously speed up your job search. You donât want it to go down like that. Palmers says, âYou should never put your work email or work phone number on your resume. Also, you should use a personal email address that sounds professional â" i.e., ralph.smith@[emailservice].com, not wonderboy@[emailservice].com â" and list your cell phone number so that communication with potential employers will remain private. In addition, you should use your computer at home to send emails to hiring managers. According to a newsurvey from CareerBuilder, an online platform that provides HR software to employers, 75 percent of HR managers have caught a lie on a resume, so think twice before trying to outsmart them.The survey, which involved more than 2,500 full-time U.S. employers, spanning different industries and company sizes, as well as 221 HR managers in the private sector, also found that being caught in a lie can hurt your chances of getting to the next stage of the hiring process. Just 12 percent of HR managers are more likely to consider asking an applicant that does something unusual or over-the-top on their resume to come for an interview.Some of the worst mistakes HR managers have caught on resumes include an applicant who said he/she wrote the c ode the hiring manager had actually written, one who said he worked for Microsoft but didnt know who Bill Gates was and one who claimed to have studied under Nietzsche.The findings are particularly interesting considering how much time HR managers actually spend reading about our job history, skills and background. In the survey, 39 percent said they spend less than 60 seconds reviewing a resume, and 19 percent spend less than 30 seconds. If youre the type of person who spends hours and hours making sure your layout is clean and every bullet point is grammatically correct and organized, then this hurts to hear.So what does this all mean for people currently on the job hunt? In a press release, Rosemary Haefner, chief human resources officer at CareerBuilder, suggests staying honest and paying close attention to what you include.
